X window

HELP!!

When i'm in x window i see vertical lines on the screen. i'm sure i configured xfree corectly. what's wrong?

what res/bit/refresh do u have the screens section set to, and can you see past the vert lines fine just between them or do they cover the whole screen? have you tried to rearrange some of the /etc/X11/XF86Config shit around and see if it helps? could be a busted ass graphics card or monitor tryin to go out of it's freq ranges.

If your display looks that noticably different than it does in another OS (windows?), then it is set up incorrectly. Sometimes it's just a game of starting a little low, then workign your way up. Most of the time, a refresh rate doesn't support a screen resolution, and you end up with a similar problem, although I haven't had that same problem yet myself.

vert refresh - 60Hz
color depth - 24

they don't cover the whole screen

there is another setting for your moniter called horizontal sync.
it will be defined in a range, going from 31.5(it always starts there) and up. find the right choice and you should be good to go.

I dont know what you are using to configure X, but Ive had the most luck with 'xf86config', always worked fine in my experience.

i used xf86config too. horizontal sync range for my monitor is 30'5-50, vertical: 50-90.

i tried everything with xf86config, and nothing works

What distro are you using beatman?

SuSE has a tool called SaX2 which has a switch 'sax2 -m 0=fbdev' which will check your framebuffer settings and set up your card with the correct horiz/vert/refresh rates.

Try 'hwinfo --framebuffer' to check all your supported modes.

I assume that you could get the sax .rpm from the SuSE site if all else fails......
