X Startup Program

Is there a better way to have programs startup when you boot X other than putting them in your $HOME/.xinit as:

exec program &
exec program &
exec wmaker < -- or other desktop

This just seems kinda hoaky to me.

Well there are a verity of gui tools you can use to setup programs to autostart apon login... but last time I checked they all just edit .xinit
