X-server screen miscoloration

I've had my Linux box, including the X-server, running fine for over a year. Just recently, my kernel panicked while Alt+F7'ing from a virtual terminal to a logged-in xsession. Following the reboot, the X-server takes significantly longer to start, and the screen is messed up once it does. There is a translucent vertical box on the left side, and things are brighter nearer to the edge of the screen. The miscoloration is so bad that I'm writing this via links2 (from console)!

And did I mention striping? Lots of striping.

I've tried recompiling the kernel modules for my video card (ATI Radeon 9000 Pro), but that hasn't fixed anything. I'm not really sure what's causing this problem. Any ideas?

Strangely enough, games such as Tuxracer seem to function normally - that is, without any discoloration or other weirdness. I wonder, what does sdl know that my window manager doesn't...

Oh, and contrary to my membership information (which I'm not sure how to change from this console browser), I'm running Gentoo - NOT RedHat 8. I thought I had changed my profile a while back... oh well.

Just an update. I've rebuilt XFree (emerge xfree) with no noticeable changes. My next option may be totally rebuilding the entire machine. I was hoping that was something I wouldn't have to do after leaving Windows.

Please - does anybody have any idea what needs to be fixed?
