Exclamation X server restarts


i known that this questions has been asked before , but i treid to search , but coudn't find it so i am posting it here

my default my runlevel is 5 so it boots to the gui login screen, after logging in if i try to switch to the CLI using the ctrl+alt+F* key combination my xserver restarts goes back to the GUI login screen

what could be the problem and how do i solve it?
