X Server Question

Hello,

I have a driver that I need to install for my video card, and the read me file says the following:

Before beginning the driver installation, you should exit the X server.
In addition you should set your default run level so you will boot to a
vga console and not boot directly into X

I am not sure how to accomplish this, and I think I have to be logged on as ROOT.
So if anyone could steer in me in the right direction I'd appreciate it alot!

Thanks,
Tim

init 3
will switch you to a full-screen (X-less) mode ...

To get rid of X at boot edit /etc/inittab and set
the default runlevel from 5 to 3

Cheers,
Tink

Kewl that worked! Thanks for a quick reply, this is really a great board for newbies like me...
Unforntunately installing the new driver do not correct my original problem of extremly slow GL rendering, if anyone knows anything about this on my GeForce2 MX400, it is really driving me nuts! Thanks Again Tink.

So, the install went without any flaws, and
if you do (as root)
lsmod
you can see a nvidia module loaded?

Also, after the install, if you look at
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
... what module is it using as a hardware
driver on that machine? E.g.
Code:
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Wed Jan 21 08:10:03 2004
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config"
(==) ServerLayout "Simple Layout"
(**) |-->Screen "Screen 1" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor "My Monitor"
(**) |   |-->Device "radeon"
(**) |-->Input Device "Mouse1"
(**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard1"
Where mine says Device "radeon", what have
you got?

And, what kind of CPU have you got?
Just so I know what FPS to expect...

Cheers,
Tink
