X server freezes from time to time

:Pengy:

Happy New Year!

Good morning(afternoon or evening)!

I have a weird problem:

From time to time X freezes, locking keybord.
I couldn't find any similarity in running applications when it happens, except that I use KDE(no matter the version, it happend on 3.2 and 3.3).

The only way to get out of this, is to telnet to freezed workstation and to kill -9 the X, which uses 99.8% CPU.

I use Xorg 6.8 (the same thing happend on 6.7 too)
KDE 3.3.2 (the same thing happened on 3.2 and 3.3.1 too)
Kernel 2.6.7

Thank You in advance for any suggestions.

Let me guess, nvidia driver? if so, try using the nv driver instead.

Else try looking at the bottom of /var/log/messages, if something detected a problem, it should be there. You can also check to see if something is mentioned in the X log, should be somewhere in /var/log as well.

The main problem with nv driver is that I need 3D support...

I have found nothing in /var/log/messages

I'll try to look at X log.

Thank you!

Any other suggestions will be appericated too!

If you are using an AMD cpu then it is unfortunately known to be buggy. You could try some of the different AGP settings to see if it helps, and if you are using an AMD cpu with a 2.4 kernel, you can try adding mem=nopentium to your kernel parameters.
