X server broken; I need it to get online

When I installed some upgrades to X, something went wrong, and my X server broke. I don't understand exactly what happened; all I can figure out is that the problem is in X. I took a picture of what the screen says. (Since I can't start X to start KDE and take a screen capture, I had to dig out my digital camera and photograph the screen. If you look at it in original size you can see what the error messages say. Sorry for the glare.)

Without X, I don't know how to enter the password to access my network and get online. I was using the KDE frontend to network-manager to access the network. I've never done it from a command prompt before. I suppose there must be a way to, but I don't know it.

Any suggestions?

I tried to fix it by running my MEPIS liveCD and copying the X configuration, but it didn't work. I didn't really expect it to.

Should I post the contents of .xsession-errors?

The only error posted is not being able to find the type1 module. Comment out the line in your xorg.conf that loads the type1 module and see if that works. If that doesn't work, grep /var/log/Xorg.0.log for the string EE to see if there are any other errors not being posted.

Okay, trying that. What is the type1 module? Is it supposed to do something I should recognize? Or, is it something for which I would notice if it weren't loaded? Although I guess I don't care, if it might prevent the X upgrades from breaking my X server.

No...that didn't work, and I gave up and reinstalled everything again. Thanks for trying.

I know you said that you reinstalled your system, but for the future, when you want to upgrade the X server, you need to make sure that your display driver is also updated or that you also install the X update that corresponds to your display card. This should prevent any conflicts caused by a mismatch between the updated X and the display driver or by the driver calling or looking for an X server file or function that was overwritten when you upgraded.
