I set up Redhat 8.0 on my father's computer, and I can boot up and login fine with X, but it leaves blotches of graphics randomly on the display. I'm sure I need to edit something in XF86Config, but I wasn't sure if this is a problem with his monitor or his video card. Here are the specs:
Those are the defaults detected by Redhat. It does indeed have that video card and that monitor. It's just annoying. If a dialog appears, after I close it, part of it will still be on the screen. Thanks for any help. By the way, I had a difficult time searching for this because I didn't really no what to call it. So I apologize if this is has been posted several times.
The computer is running kernel 2.4.18. Driver "i810" is the driver that the database in xf86config says corresponds to the Intel 845. In the /etc/X11/XF86Config there is a section "Device" and for Driver it says "i810". there wasn't an XF86Config-4 section - just the one I mentioned above. Like I said earlier, it works but it's just a pain having blotches of graphics on the screen. Thanks for your help.
OK, i know your problem! By the way, the new versions of XFree86 use the XF86Config-4 Config File. The earlier (under version 4.*) the XF86Config. Choose the one you are using and try instead of i810 "vesa". I hope it helps.
