X configuration test freezes computer during install!!
 

I just got a copy of mandrake Linux 8.1 and I tried to install it on my computer. it installed to the point where it asks me to configure X. I chose a
display of 800x600 and a refresh rate of 60Hz (which my installation of Windows runs OK on) then the DrakX installer shows me a colorful screen, asking if the display is OK. When I say 'yes', the screen then garbles up and the system hangs. The same thing happens when i say 'no' when i choose 'cancel', even for a resolution of 640x480. What can I do, i need the Graphical interface.
When I boot up linux using the graphical LILO, it seems to go well during initialization of services, and then it switches to text mode. if i type 'startx' it says 'no such service'.
My Monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster 3 on a SiS 630 display driver. my computer is a 533Mhz Celeron with 256MB RAM
