x configuration problem while installing yellow dog

A friend of mine (a mac guy) has an old blue and white g3 mac that he wants to install yellow dog on. I tried to install it, and everything works but X.

When X tries to guess the video card and monitor, it comes up with a mach 64 card (it really has the standard ati rage card). It guesses the monitor correctly (a 17 inch apple studio display {16 inch viewable}).

If I either stay with the mach 64 or manually set it for the rage card (along with the monitors horisontal and vertical rates) the monitor craps out as soon as x starts and throws up an error of h and v rates out of range. The wierd thing is the rates the monitor lists are out of the manual range I set.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Try using a generic card or possible adjust the horizontal and vertical sync rates to a more conservative setting

Yes, I tried the "ati rage generic" option once. It didn't help. If someone can suggest another generic card to try I'll do it, but I didn't see just a "generic card" option.

The problem with the sync rates is I manually set the range for (for example... I don't have it in front of me) 35 - 65. The monitor then shuts off when x starts and a message flashes on the screen that says the sync rates are out of range, and reports them as being about 105. 105 is way out of the range that I manually set.

Thanks for the help,
Michael
