X broken after recompiling kernel.

I updated the module-init-tool to try 2.6-test2. When I installed module-init-tool, I did
Code:

moveold
so the insmod and depmod stuff became *.old.

After it's done, both 2.4 and 2.6 were working. Two weeks later, that's yesterday, I applied the 2.4.21-ck3 patch and recompiled my kernel. Then X is broken now. Error message:

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (Input/output error)

What could be the possible cause?

Thanks

I fixed that problem: I was stupid enough to forget to compile the Unix98 PTY support into to kernel.

However, my X is still not working. It now complaines "could not open default font 'fixed'
