X and virtual consoles problem

when i'm on X and try to go to other virtual console (ctrl+alt+Fx) and then try to go back, i just get a black screen and no X.
the same if i exit the X and try "startx" again
any idea about what's wrong??
thanks

My x session is on virtual terminal 7 which I can access by alt-F7 from my virtual terminal I am currently using.

Not all distros are the same, though. Try all your function keys alt-F1 through alt-F12. One of them will contain your running x session.

to reiterate: even if you startx from console 1 (alt-ctrl-1), X appears on console 7 (atl-ctrl-7). you can go back to your original session if you like, at alt-ctrl-1. and if you had typed "startx &", you'd even be able to use that terminal.

I use blank screen as a screen-saver ;) -- and it usually kicks in, when I am on a different console ... :D.

On a more serious note, make sure you use both, <Crtl><Alt>, together with your function key, some distributions require it, and it does no harm in either way.

yes, thats right, but the problem is when i try to get back to X,when a press alt+F7 the screen goes black and the X never comes back
when i was on RedHat that worked fine, but now i'm on debian and i don't know what could be missconfigured

thanks.
