X-11 Forwarding problems with XawTV
Hey all,
Thanks in advanced for checking out this thread..
Heres the setup:
I have a linux box down the hall from my room with a tv tuner card (bttv chipset) configured and working properly under mandrake 9. I also set it up to allow XDMCP requests from clients in my local network. When sitting locally at the linux box and running XawTV, I get my us-cable perfectly.
Heres the problem:
When on my laptop, I use Xmanager (beta) to connect (XDMCP) to my linux box; login; etc. When I run Xawtv from this virtual desktop, Xawtv runs, but the picture is pitch black. Xmanager is reporting no errors.
Please help, I've searched far and long for an answer to this one, I would greatly appreciate some help, Thanks again all.

Just a guess, but try changing the capture setting of xawtv from overlay to something else.

You are sending video and audio streams over the eth connection.
Its another guess: isn't the speed of the network limiting xawtv?

mascdman: I tried the different overlays, no such luck.
bruno: As for speeds it should be fine, Its all local 10/100. I don't think its a bandwidth issue.
Thanks for the guesses, I'm up for any more suggestions too

Well, I just tried ssh X11 forwarding with xawtv and although I get a picture on my local screen (encryption overhead brought it down to about 10-15 fps), the sound is played on the remote computer. X11 only manages video stuff, not audio, so I wasn't surprised. I'll try this later with XDMCP, but I bet the same thing will happen (with the sound, anyways -- I don't know if I'll get a picture). You could also try using tvtime instead of xawtv, perhaps a different program will work.

Ok, thanks for the test, I'll try it just using X11 forwarding, also note that I'm using windows xp with Xmanager.
I'll try cygwin's X manager to see if I can get better results, thanks again for the idea

Making progress. Okay heres what I got now. I have done much experimenting and determined the problem (using xdpyinfo) that a module MIT-SHM was missing on my remote display.
This Xlib extension is needed for xawtv as far as I know, and I'm looking for a way to find this module for cygwin or Xmanager or X-win32. Which ever one I can get to work with it
