Writing to NTFS through FTP?

I am connecting to my sister's computer using FTP setup on her computer. She is using Windows XP Home, and has an NTFS partition.

I connected and saw that I was able to successfully rename a file, even though it is an NTFS partition and if I tried to do it on my own harddrive, it would spit out an error and not rename it.

I do not know how FTP works, but if an FTP server is setup on an operating system that CAN write to NTFS partitions, can a computer that CAN NOT write to an NTFS partition be able to write to the NTFS partition through FTP? I am posting this because I don't want to mess up my sister's 120 GB harddrive. She'd be pissed at me if I did.

When using FTP, the protocol just facilitates manipulation of files on the host system. The actual operation is still done on by the host OS. In your case, you're just telling ftp to tell the OS to rename the file. ie. It's XP that's doing the actual renaming, not Linux.

Hope I did not confuse u.

Thank you. Now I can copy over my 35 GB of data without worrying that I will mess up her harddrive partition.

Thanks again,
