Writing to DVD-RW using cdrecord

Hello,

I use a script to back up my data, and until recently was using CD-RW. I have upgraded to a DVD burner, and when trying to write to DVD-RW the cdrecord command fails, but K3b works just fine. It can burn the iso file created by the backup script.
I am wondering what is K3b doing that I am not.

The command in the script is as follows:

cdrecord -tao -eject speed=4 blank=fast dev=ATA:0,1,0 isofile

I use Suse 10 and the cdrecord is version 2.1, which is also what K3b uses since I checked in the configure dialog of K3b.

The error I get is this:
Unspecified command not implemented for this drive

While I was typing this message, I actually figured out how K3b was doing it by using the show debugging output button which shows what it did.

I wasn't going to post this message but I changed my mind in the hopes that it may help others.

To blank/format a dvd k3b uses the following command on my system:
dvd+rw+format -gui blank /dev/hdb
in my system the dvd writer is hdb, in yours it may be different.

To write to a dvd-rw is uses growisofs command:
growisofs -Z /dev/hdb=your_iso_file -dvd-compat -overburn -speed=4
It also uses undocumented -use-the-force-luke options. According the the manpage you should really know what you are doing, so I am leaving them out of my script.

I hope this is usefull to somone
Joe.

I believe this site might shed some light on this matter:

DVDs do differ from CDs so you'll need to do it a bit different way. Sorry, I'm in a hurry, but read the relevant pieces of the linked page -- about growisofs at least!
