Write failure on USB - high load average

I have a 128GB USB stick that occasionally hangs when being written to. It leaves the machine running with a load average of about 1, and I can't find a way to stop this without a reboot. I can read the memory stick, and when I try to unmount it it tells me it is waiting for rsync. If I force the unmount, the load average stays high.

Is there a way to stop this?

Intel i5 quad 4 running Mint 17 and kernel 3.13.0-24-generic

Stop what ?. Stop the USB from playing up ?.

Once you force the umount, you will have (at least) one task waiting in unfinished I/O - hence the loadavg figure. It will never go away. Of itself no concern - more so on an i5.

To my way of thinking, "something, as-yet unknown to you, is using that drive!"

Don't "force(!!)(!!)(!!)" anything! Figure it out!

What something?

There is an rsync job that is unkillable - sudo kill -9 doesn't affect it. Any other options?
