won't read dvd-r

I tried to mount a dvd-r and it said mount: you must specify the filesystem type, but I put a dvd movie in and mounted it and it worked, why is this happening and how can I fix it.

What programs are you using for both? Most players recognize a DVD with something on it automatically, but I am not sure with a blank DVD-R.

Actually, the dvd-r isn't blank. I just typed mount /dev/dvd /mnt/hdc
with the dvd that was burned I got an error. And with the movie I didn't

What did you use to make the DVD-R ?? A windows program? Was the disk Finalized? Or is it a multi-session disc, which you can still add stuff to?
If possible, if your system had the 'lshw' command, put the DVD into the player, then open a console and type 'lshw'. Then locate the DVD-device and see if it tells you what type of media is inside the drive.

Does your system use an /etc/fstab file?? (I'm not sure if your/all debians do) but what have you got in the fstab file for the filetype for this DVD-drive? It should be iso9660,udf .

Also, try adding the -t option to your to mount command with a few file system types. Most likely it's udf or iso9660. There are some other ones, but they are less common.
