WinXP dual boot on slave drive - possible ?

I know, I know, install WinXP on the master drive, then install Linux.

But - here's what I did: I have Mandrake 9.2 installed on hda ( /boot, swap, and /) and wanted to have WinXP on my hdb. (two different harddrives)

I made a linux boot CD so i could recover. Also backed up /boot so i could restore it.

Installed XP - which required me to take my 15meg /boot partition and let winxp have it for the MBR. WinXp installs fine - with it's MBR stuff on hdA, and the rest of the installation on hdb.

Boot back into linux with my boot CD and it fixes the /boot, then i restore with the backed-up /boot files. Use MCC to restore LILO.

Can now boot LILO and linux, but when I choose "windows" all I get is a black screen telling me that the drive (hdb) is not bootable. My lilo.conf points to the correct table=/dev/hdb.

Any way to have LILO boot hdb's winxp ? Could I resize my 15MB /boot partition somehow to give WinXP the beginning portion of hda? (MCC won't let me unmount /boot though...)

If I physically change the drives' so that hdb is the master? does the master have to be called "hda" and thus screw up the linux?

Thanks - hope I'm making sense!

Don't need to. If you're using grub, edit /boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/grub.conf, whichever you're using. In the listing for the winxp, you will have to use the map command to remap the drives so that xp if fooled into thinking it's master. Something like
map (hdo) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
Check out 'Zen and the Art of Using Grub' for specifics on how to use the map command.
Sorry, wasn't paying attention. You use Lilo; there's something similar for Lilo as well. Search for it 'cause I don't remember where I saw it.

Really? Interesting. If what I'm trying now doesn't work, I'll look at swapping the drives' master statuses and try the map thing.

Since I have to re-install xp one way or the other, i decided to try the impossible one more time... I managed to split my /boot partition into 2 pieces. so now its an 8meg /boot, and a new 8meg fat32 partition, on the master hda.

- got linux and lilo back to normal with this new partition (hda1)
- though it is only a warning, i do get a message on startup complaining that the size of hba1 is not as expected. (can that be fixed?)

- now installing XP again, letting it have its MBR (for now) and 1 meg on the hda2. (for ntldr, etc.?)

When that's done, my hope is that i can go back into linux with my mkrescue CD and and just redo LILO, changing the lilo.conf to point to (for xp) hda2 instead of the second harddrive hdb, where the big \windows installation resides.

I'll post the results....

I did it!!!

Wow - I can't believe i got this to work!

Installing XP after linux, and on a slave drive no less! Dual booting, with LILO on the MBR: nice.

Well, it did need a tiny partition on the master for the ntldr, but the main xp installation is on hdb, the slave disk.

Had to manually edit the lilo.conf because mmc put in extra lines ("map-drive...", which i think are only useful for like <=win98 on slaves) and pointed it to the little /dev/hda2. took out any "root" and "table" lines under the 'other' section.

So the prize is that I didn't have to re-install Mandrake, which I really did not want to do.

Only thing is that the free space on /boot causes a warning during linux startup because there is less than 5meg free. but it doesn't seem to matter.
