Wine won't work

When I try to run anything with WINE I get the following error:

wine: lstat /root/.wine/wineserver-localhost/socket : No such file or directory

If I try to copy the socket file in wineserver-andrew.earthlink.net to wineserver-localhost I get the error:

cp: cannot open 'socket' for reading: No such device or address

I'm not sure what version of WINE i'm running, i'm runng RedHat Phoebe (8.0.92 beta) and my kernel version is 2.4.20-2.2.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

Do you have configuration files for user root?

BTW It's a good idea not to run wine as root.

I didn't add any configuration files, but before I upgraded from RH 8 to RH Phoebe I edited the wine configuration file so that programs I started with WINE would use Gnome as their window manager.

hm... i am having the problem too - wine creates that dir, but
it fails when it's there. when i delete that dir (wineserver-hostname),
wine will start fine; but some scripts (neverwinter nights for instance),
will not give me the option to delete the dir after it is created and
before it is used in the script, hence wine will not work... and the
installation fails before it starts. is there an option or setting for wine
somewhere to disable creation of this winserver-hostname dir?
