Wine compilation eating my whole free space

Before doing ./tools/wineinstall I had about 300MB free on my partition. Now building is in process, my free space is 5.5 MB and still loosing with about 1MB/minute. See that:
Code:
~/Archives/wine-20040505]$ du -h --max-depth=1
288M ./dlls
16M ./libs
469k ./misc
549k ./files
11M ./tools
1.6M ./documentation
3.1M ./controls
69k ./loader
3.4M ./objects
934k ./server
4.4M ./programs
8.5M ./windows
6.5M ./include
348M .
Is that space usage normal?

So, can you tell me how much it will take at all, and how much space it will require when it is fully installed and that directory removed?

I don't know exactly how much space it takes. I know it takes a lot because I remember seeing it eating my hardrive free space when compiling and I remember a friend of mine warning me about it.

I know OpenOffice couldn't compile on my system since it ran out of space, so I wouldn't think it'd be different for other programs.

A typical Wine build tree for me is approximately a gig.

If you can't build Wine yourself try using the prebuilt binaries
