windows wiped my MBR


hi friends, this is a story about a bunch of demented guys hailing from redmond who think we shouldn't have any other os on our pc but their stinking windows... i had to reinstall xp today and my mbr got rewritten, hence i can no longer access linux... tried a few rescue disks but to no avail, i cant find any coming with sata support... hope sb can help me sort this out! thx in advance

If you have a boot floppy then you should use it to boot into Linux. Then, if you are using LILO, su to root then use this command:

lilo -M /dev/hda
Where /dev/hda is your hard disk. That will overwrite whatever is currently in the MBR with a new LILO. But I wouldn't know what to do if you use Grub so maybe someone else can help out if that's the case.

thanks for your reply, i managed to sort things out through a bare grub boot floppy! well i learnt something new about the way grub works after all ^^ regards
