WindowMaker icon/appicon control; help with WMWindowAttributes

Folks -

I'm having a hard time framing this question neatly, so please bear with me.

I love WindowMaker, but I hate the dock and (most) appicons. Probably, I'm just missing some simple concept, but I find that my screen just gets horribly cluttered. So, I've disabled the dock, and I cluster all my dockapps (like WMCalClock) up by the clip. Very handy.

But I've got some applications that just spawn useless appicons for every window, and, worse, WindowMaker uses their nice informative icons for the appicon rather than the miniwindow, and then uses a generic miniwindow icon. Not helpful.

I discovered that, if I generally disable appicons -- using the Attributes... menu, then changing the window specification to "Defaults for all windows", then, under Application Specific, set "No application icon", my application (Cadence's icfb, if it matters), behaves properly -- the desired icon image is used for the miniwindows, and all is great.

Except. (You expected that, right?)

When I restart, none of my dockapps work correctly (app icons grayed out, no bobbing duck).

I discovered that I can, individually, turn on app icons (for instance, I like one for iceweasel), and then they'll function normally; this information is, apparently, saved in GNUstep/Defaults/WMWindowAttributes, and it's pretty easy to hand-edit.

So, I see two possible avenues to fix the problem:

1) Find some way to manually turn on app icons for my dockapps. I suspect this is by name, but, unfortunately, I can't get to the Attributes menu on dockapps to change enable them.

2) Find a way to specify, in the WMWindowAttributes, a default for a wildcard application name. It seems that the application uses names like "Cadence Window ##.empty", where the ## is some window sequence number.

Thus the following questions:

A) Is there some way to open the Attributes... menu for an appicon?
B) How do I determine the ... is it class name? ... of the dockapp?
C) Is there a regular expression syntax for use in WMWindowAttributes?

Sorry for the long-winded question!

Thanks for any advice!
