Window Manager problems, i guess

hello everyone,

my linux skills are best describe as developing. i've been tinkering with linux for a couple of months, and this is the first weird Doze like thing i've encountered. i would appreciate any help you guys could offer..

PII-MMX 300mHz
192 MB RAM
distro. RedHat 7.2
kernel 2.4.7-10

yesterday i diabled ipchains and enabled iptables. i also installed a port scan detector, which is writtin in perl (psad 0.9). i have the system configuered to boot into X, and when i restarted my computer everything looked normal. Nevertheless, when a user attempts to login under X, the KDE logo appears on the screen and it hangs when it says initializing system services...logins at the terminal behave normally. i don't know what i did. i thought i was very careful in following the instructions i found for the the above procedure.

does anyone know what happened or more realisticly how i can find out what happened?

thanks,
-mxr-

Unhappy 'initializing system services' ...help! =]

hi, i found your post on google when i ran a search for 'initializing system services' . i came across the same exact problem when running kde 2.2.2, i would startx and it would get to the splash screen, then it would get to the second stage of that splash screen (initializing system services), wait there for about 2 minutes, and then the splash screen would disappear and i would be stuck looking at a grey screen and could do nothing but use the other terminals (or reboot =P ) . the funny part about this is that kde was running beautifully until i inadvertently ruined it for myself. i decided to do an upgrade with apt-get upgrade (btw i'm using debian), and after that it never worked. i was wondering if you could explain to me what the heck went wrong and how you resolved the issue? i've seen a couple other posts out there on the web regarding people with the same problem but i've found no answers. if you could send me back an email to this email address i'd be very greatful. thanks a lot!

Dave
