Linux recognizes many different types of hardware and installs appropriate modules (drivers) for them. If you have a piece of hardware that is not recognized by Linux, it is most likely that no appropriate module is available (or the distribution simply does not have the required module). Keep in mind that other OSes (including Windows) may recognize that a new device has been added to the system, but that does not mean that it will work since the OS does not have the correct drivers. :( Also, a good point to make is that Linux supports a wide variety of legacy hardware (old devices) which makes it unbeatable when refurbishing old PCs and laptops. ;) |
just a short story to support the above poster:
my laptop Panasonic Toughbook CF-48x is built for winXP. i can install winXP, but then i have to have seperate drivers for the following devices: video card chipset sound modem NIC touchpad speedtouch (laptop power saver, great thing to have) winXP pro will not install ANY of those drivers as none of them are on the windowsXP HCL (hardware compatablity list) thus they are not 100% supported by M$. in fact when you install all of those drivers with the exception of the speedtouch you will get a protection error as none of the drivers are signed. on that exact same laptop i can install RH9 and EVERYTHING works from right out of the install. all of the drivers are there, there are not glitches to speak of, the NIC works, the modem works, everything. that is the true power of PnP and its not from microsoft its from redhat ie: Linux. i had simular experiance with mandrake 10 on that laptop, but MDK10 runs way slower then RH9, and the updater when i finnaly got the darn thing to connect made the system fubar so i had to reinstall it. i have not been successful getting slackware or debian to install on that laptop. i have been successful with knoppix, and again everything worked right from first boot. |
how do you know if its installed or not and if so how would you use it? like for an example my cam it would say "PC" if its working and when i boot up in linux my cam says its working but i have no idea how to use it and logitech has no drivers for it does it mean its still usable?

What distro, what make and model is the cam?

for the modem, i just set it up to dial in to a fake # and i could hear it dialing, then got the familur no dial tone error. in windows NONE of those things work until i installed the chipset drivers, then each set of drivers for each device and many reboots. as for your webcam check your manufacture or google for some kind of software that you may need, or try Yahoo MSG as it has a built in web cam hosting function. |

I stumbled upon those pages while looking for linux drivers for my Creative webcam and found opensource.creative.com which looked interesting. Anyway, thought this might be helpful for you and others. |
