Will installing XP get rid of Mandrake

I need windows for a couple of items of specialist hardware and i was wondering, if i were to install it on a partition with a nackered version of windows, would it then just remove the entire disk drive for itself getting rid of linux.

No, it shouldn't take over the drive completely, unless you tell it to.

It will clobber the MBR, though, and after install, it will boot straight to Windows. You will need either a boot-floppy or your install/rescue disc to boot into Linux and restore GRUB or LILO, which you are using.

No. You just got to have around 2 gb free on your diskand make up a NTFS/FAT partition.
You WILL loose your boot manager if it is loaded in your MBR.
Make a Linux bootdisk prior to install WinXP.
