why would my printer become "disabled" in print settings?

I just saw a trivial but odd curiosity that's happened a few times before. My printer became "disabled" (as in not enabled, not as in broken) in the print settings. There's nothing wrong with the printer; the "enabled" setting had just been turned off (recognizable by a "pause" symbol superimposed over the printer icon). It's not a problem; I simply turned it back on, and now the printer prints as normal. But I didn't turn it off, so I have no idea what "disabled" it.

Is that supposed to happen as a response to error? I did have a paper jam this morning, but I doubt that was supposed to make the printer "disabled," because the "disabling" almost never happens.

does it have a sleep mode you're not presently aware of?

Have you looked in /var/log/cups or whatever the SystemD equivalent might be (if you don't have rsyslog installed)?

It might help and won't hurt to know the make/model of the printer and what distro/version you are using.

CUPS logs to /var/log/cups (regardless of systemd or not) by default, as defined in cups-files.conf

Reference:
Code:
man cups-files.conf

Afterthought:

I think a paper jam could well cause a printer to report as disabled. It may need to be re-enabled ("resumed") in CUPS via http://localhost:631.

It very well could. Looking it up.
