Why my linux is slower than Windows in surfing internet
 

My notebook is connected to the company Lan, installed with windows 2000 and linux mandrake 10.0 beta2.

It is obvious that windows explorer is reacting much much faster than linux's konqueror/netscape/mozilla, why?

when i open a website in linux, the status bar shows a text reads "resolving .............", and i got to wait for it.

in windows, everything just shown almost immediately i enter the web address.

my machine is intel P4 2.4GHz, 512 MB Ram.

Hi, Im not exaculy smart... But ive used IE and mozilla on windows on dial up. And in my experience, mozilla takes longer to find pages. Although it loads everythign faster it seems. Just a thought...

You could try downloading Mozilla Firefix from www.mozilla.org - that's pretty quick (I find Firefox on Linux much faster than IE6 in Win, anyway; but then I also find Opera & Konqueror faster, with Mozilla being no slower).

Another possibility is that if you are mainly accessing sites with ISS, I have a vague memory that there's a certain type of access where ISS does something sneaky to allow IE to get pages faster than other browsers.

Could be a bug in Mandrake (it is a beta release). Could be something to do with the configuration (e.g. if Linux is getting every page from the website and Windows is accessing pages cached on the LAN)? Are you accessing a page first with Linux, then later with Windows and it gets cached before Windows accesses it?

I suggest trying to access an obscure page served by Apache (any Linux-related page should do) to get a good measure of speed. Failing that, try booting from Knoppix or something like that and checking speed that way.

keep in mind that IE is built into windows and is running all the time even when you dont have It open it is running in the background constantly. which can make it seem faster just cause it is always open. if you use Mozilla Firefox you should notice a difference is surfing speed. As it is a much slimmer version of Mozilla

try opera . it is sure as hell faster than ie or mozilla and others.

i havent seen any palpable differences in page-loading speeds between IE and Moz.
what bout other work you do online from your linux partition - say, ssh/ftp/...? are they all reacting slow? try loading the same page which is slow in Moz using some like lynx, and see if its the same (it'll be faster, but check if it takes time to resolve the name too.)
does it even take long loading some like google (then it HAS to be some network setting, if u ask me, thats not right - and not Moz.)
you might also want to check your Moz preferences?

Maybe there is something wrong with your mandrake installation or the connection.
I think that "resolving the host.." is something like translate the webadresses to the real IP-adresses, which is then used on the net.
With the standard mandrake 9.2, i use on one of my boxes Mozilla works faster
than IE 6.1/winXP on the same machine.

I also have the same problem as you, futurist. I posted a thread about this but I still haven't been able to fix the problem. No matter what browser, Opera, Mozilla, Firefox, the computer still takes 6 seconds just to resolve the host. So it is not the browser's fault that it is slow, as some people may be suggesting.

I'm no expert, but maybe check your /etc/resolv.conf to make sure it's pointing to the right place to get nameserver information (mine just points at my local router address and then I guess the router does things from there).

For the guy who had issues with rendering pages as opposed to resolving the hostname, there is an option in Mozilla in about:config to start rendering pages immediately rather than waiting until the whole page has downloaded, which can make the browser appear quicker in some circumstances.

I just installed opera 7.23, it is faster than other browsers now.
