Why do you use Linux?
 

I have my own reasons why I made the plunge at home to running linux as the primary, Windows XP in a VM so that Quicken will run (sorry Wine folks), and even ditching Microsoft Office.

I did so to the point of not even buying games which don't seem like they will run under Wine.

And my reason is cost -- Windows is expensive and lets face it, NTFS gets slower and slower as time goes on so without a SSD your install will slow down. Then there's the caching of program files that windows does taht eats up gigs of space, etc. life has been good under Linux for over a year at home now.

Many don't take the plunge b/c of games - which is understandable.

For the HOME users out there -- why did you / do you use Linux and how?

I use Linux because it perfectly fits my needs.
Haven't seen something like this in my Windows times.

Sorry, but Linux does the same, and it is a good thing. Not used memory is wasted money.

I use linux because I'm awesome:)

Some other reasons are:
- it gives me control over my system.
- it is stable
- it is free (in every sense of this word)
- I like tinkering with things

Because my computer got sick from XP and yes - why not move forward + it is cost free? Windows XP is nice but it is old for today and exploring new stuff will never hurt you just like knowing more languages. And yes aside from money and popularity reason games and specific tasks are additional reasons why people stick with windows. Does it really matter which OS you use as long as it does what it should? Doubt you will care if your fridge or toaster will run windows if it came with it + works fine. Windows is worthy to use only if it is legal - otherwise you need be extra carefull to not regret piracy consequences.

I don't think that's correct. If I gave my son a car for his 18th birthday and he'd have to spend time learning how to drive it - would it be correct to say that he didn't get it free? I don't think so. Even if I had given him some lessons beforehand, it'd still be time invested in learning. It's like that with everything. First you need to learn how to use windows, linux, a car, etc. before you start using it comfortably.

If that's the case, you pay double for windows (licence + time spent learning how to use it).

It's more interesting.

I use Linux for exactly the same reasons that I simultaneously also use Macintosh OS/X and (urgh...) Microsoft Windows: because these execution environments are needed by software that does something I want to do. (Or, as the case may be, that others want to pay me money to do.) ;)

To my way of thinking, hardware is cheap now (especially gently-used stuff), and operating systems are not unreasonably expensive. What matters, then, is getting the work done.

Linux is "the system that runs the Web these days," and rightly so. It also has the unique characteristic of being able to run on literally everything from a cell-phone to the mightiest mainframes and all that is between. That alone makes it quite mandatory that one be conversant and experienced with Linux.

I use linux because in my country you cannot find an original pack of operating systems except linux's packs.

I use linux mostly to became familiar to old unix systems .
I use linux since it's give me a chance to be OS developer.
I use linux for the philosophy that makes it.
I use linux today and hurd tomorrow since i
respect free-software more .
I start to using linux when i first time read and saw richard stallman's documents .

in terms of pirating windows -- hey, that USED to be an option.

I gave up on piracy years and years ago because of the advances made in viruses. Viruses used to be intended to destroy. Now they are great ways to get a zombie network that you can use to do things like drive up hits on a web (pr0n) page to increase revenues. And a smart hacker will get a non-script-kidde virus, insert it into a cracked copy of Today's Great Game, share it out as a torrent, wait for the zombies to call in, and then use the zombies in a way that avoids detection.

So pirating windows / office is really impractical these days. Legalities aside - its not worth the trouble.

For some reason, some posts here were found unhelpful by somebody. I think it was a bit harsh. There's nothing wrong with those posts.
To the person(s) who did it: Chill out, take a deep breath and don't take things so seriously:)

Because I don't believe in punishing people just because they think differently.

True but do you really think you get punished by some people who will mark your reply unhelpfull? Really? Come on..it is internet. Only thing that hurts is your iPride not soul or body or life in general outside it. That's why i don't care if i will get even -1(negative) million rep here because the content matters not looks.

My post wasn't meant to be helpful, it stated why I use Linux.
