Why do some commands disappear???

I installed RedHat Linux 9 with workstation option on my laptop. However, I discover some commands disappear, such as ifconfig, chgroot, etc... did I do something wrong during installation?

Yeah, by default Redhat usually doesn't place /sbin into your path. You can add it to your .bashrc or global /etc/profile files. The .bashrc is in your users home directory.

normal users don't have access to programs (or any files for that mather) in /sbin.
that's why sbin stands for superuser bin (or something in that direction)

really a security concern.

I note in JetBlackZ's Simply Linux http://simplylinux.punted.net/BasicSecurity.html that he says you can put the following in ~/.bashrc for root and user accounts to drop the history file at logon:

echo "" > ~/.bash_history

when I do ls -a in any users directory even as root... the only bash file I see is .bash_history. There is no .bashrc to add that line too. I created a .bashrc and added that line above but the history is not being deleted on login.

Any suggestions?

true, but even when i do a whereis as a user for ifconfig i can not find it, but when im root not only can i find it, but i have access to it.

nothing major, if i need ifconfig access i just su - over so no stress. it is also nice to know that others that i let access my systems can not get that info without root.

Just because it isn't in your path doesn't mean they cannot access it.

whereis will only search your path so if it isn't in it, it will not be found.
