Why can't I add new menu items?
 

Hello

I'm running Fedora Linux (core 1#) and Gnome. I have a lot of games and other programs that did not automatically create menu entries/icons when I installed them and thus I must use the "run" box or terminal each time I want to execute them. I have tried to add them to various sections of the menu as demonstrated below...

"games>more games>entire menu>add new item to this menu>create launcher"

However, I always get an error message telling me that I "cannot save menu item to disk" and this...

"Details: Error writing file 'applications:/Games/MoreGames/BZFlag.desktop': Unsupported operation"

I've tried adding new menu items under root as well and the same thing happens.

Could you ppl help me please?. I just wanted to have things organized a little bit so I could find them easily.

Most of the time you have to be root to add items to the menu.

Crap, didn't see the part where you tried as root as well. How are you trying to add? Have you brought up the menu editor to try and add instead of thru the Launcher?

Thank you very much for responding. No, I don't know where the menu editor is in Fedora/Gnome. Do I need to type it into the "run" box to load it up or is it hiding somewhere in the menus?.

I had the same problem...I didn't have this problem in RedHat 9. I think fedora needs a little work. Should not have been released yet! There are a of stupid problems caused by trying to convert RedHat to a different distro.

Hmmm..I wonder if there is a patch for this or at least some sort of work-a-round like perhaps just adding a separate menu somewhere. How would one get around this little bug?.

Its not the distro, more along the lines of Gnome as it has nothing to do with the distro. The only differences is different versions, etc. So if you can't edit your Gnome menu, don't blame the distro, blame Gnome.

please exlain fix

You should be able to edit / add / remove applications by:
1. Logging in as root
2. Opening /usr/share/applications
3. Fiddling with the .desktop files

This is how I have figured out how to do it - but there MUST be a better way, and I just don't know how

Also, I do not know how to move applications between folders and add new folders

If someone knows how, please reply

as said above must be root, i used this to delete stuff from gnome but haven't tried using nautilus to add.
