Just resurrected a netbook to drive a webcam on a telescope - Slackware-14.2 (which is quite happy with KDE).

KDE? What are you specs for that netbook? I wouldn't dare run anything more than Xfce on mine, though it currently runs LXDE.

HP Mini 110: Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 150GB HDD.

It's much slower than my desktop and elderly Asus 501 laptop, but it's useable. KDE is a little slower than Xfce but not enough to cause problems, and it lets me make my own simple red on black colour scheme (after all, it's going to be used in the dark). Can't use Dolphin because I haven't been able to get rid of the white stripes on the file pane so I'll be using Midnight commander instead.

Things have turned on their head in recent years - KDE is actually "lighter" than Gnome and even XFCE in some respects.

Hope you get some good images! (Totally no idea what planets are up at the moment.)

As for me, I only run 64-bit Linux nowadays. I do however still maintain a load of 32-bit *Windows* PCs at work.

My first try was with Xfce but it was much slower than I expected so I tried KDE to see "just how bad could it be" and was pleasantly surprised.

This is for the MkI version using a newly found old telescope (a hand me up from the kids) to practice making adaptors and modifying cameras before spending actual money on better optics.

So now I'm using two 32 bit computers, the other being an old laptop set up permanently on a scanner, eveything else is 64 bit.

I'm setting up a 32bit 686 for my brother so he can youtube , email and (holding nose) Facebook this is about all he is going to do with it
it had XP on it was so slow it was almost useless but now It is painless to use
that computer made me glad I took the time to learn something about linux

for myself it's 64 bit all the way even if I have to spend $35.00
on a laptop with no HDD

Probably a good hard disk (or SSD) for that system will cost you more <grin>

I run 32 bit Debian VMs in GNS3, takes up less memory.
