if you want a challenge then, use slackware or debian if your a fast learner... you can skip the mandrake and redhat distros, and go straight to the advanced distros...

Not only could she use linux for surfing, chatting, emailing and mp3's...you'll never have to worry about nasty email attachments and all the other online security problems that windows suffers from.

you could easily set her up an account, and show and setup what she uses it for with ease.. all three of those she does is a cinch to get working... and can't be too hard for her to learn to use.

Dude, if your a complete newbie you wont even get halfway done with the slackware installation without errors all over the place! yes my friend its that hard. Get Mandrake and live life happy. It coems with all the stuff you need to get started too.

Debian i heard is even worse than Slackware in setting up and getting running properly.

I'd have to say go for slack Also there are a few slackers who post here besides me so most questions get answered quickly. If you've got a cd-rw then download the install and extra iso's from your nearest mirror ( there is a list on the slack site).

Aussie I love you cuz you're running slack hehehe

Well I tried Mandrake (so the easiest) and Slackware (the hardest?). I really hated Mandrake... I heard Debian is not too bad but it become a bit in late. I suggest you Slackware, it's not so easy but once you're started it works really fine.

I use mandrake and i really like it, cos i can get various things done much easier when i'm in a rush. But i've hacked out so much of the newbie-friendly stuff that ppl like therion12 seem to like, so it's useable. If you're clever and feeling brave, Slackware would certainly teach you stuff.

Learn on redhat for about a week, get sick of it and move to slackware. You will never look back.

Slackware all the way. It is completely customisable, and the Install cd is able to boot your root partition if u ever get into trouble (happened a lot when i was learning, back in rh 5).
