Use fvwm and enjoy handmade "icons".

Check "screenlets" wether or not they support some icon engine thing.

Do you mean desktop icons? Do you really need to have desktop icons, or will smaller taskbar shortcut icons be an acceptable alternative?

I use IceWM, with taskbar shortcut icons for my favorite applications. I find the more useful than desktop icons because they consume less screen space and they also don't get obscured by windows.

I dislike desktop icons, and don't use them even when they exist.
