--------------------------------------------------
i select the one "Linux Native" when i install Mandrake, which one is that?
--------------------------------------------------

do this to see what you have

[david@Micro david]$ cat /proc/mounts
/dev/root / ext3 rw,noatime 0 0
/dev /dev devfs rw 0 0
/proc /proc proc rw 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts rw 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs rw 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/windows ntfs ro 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows_c ntfs ro 0 0
/proc/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs rw 0 0

look for the fs type for / and any other linux native partitions you have

Linux Native it the partition type, like Linux (aka type 83), swap (aka type 82), fat16 (aka type .......oh well might as well post them all

WHAT! Yeah, that's what I meant.

All on the same computer? Crazy, why the "variation"?

I use ext3 on all my machines because they can be mounted as ext2... in case the emergency boot disk doesn't support Reiser. However, I used Reiser for a while and found it to be quicker than ext3... but speed is not an all-important factor, whilst the ability to fix problems is!

Heard ReiserFS was fast with the small files and now stable.

Used Reiserfs(2.4.7) until I lost everything,

waited for a while - until 2.4.19, tried again.

After a short while it was taking upto 5 secs to open one small text file that needed writing to.

Decided to reindex the tree file on the umounted root filesystem. Wiped stuff, system wouldn't start.

Don't like ReiserFS, possibly though because I can't set it up reliably yet fast.

Now using ext3 (ext2 with a journal) bcause the files on my root are mostly smaller than what xfs does best.

....now if only I could convert my legacy ~20gb fat32 backup drive to something less embarrassing...

Reiserfs is very fast and stable, IMHO
I have used ext3, and should say that reiserfs is much more better

I'm not too up on the whole ext3 thing. I have to read up on it. Does it really offer a performace increase? Or is it just stablility? I must say that I've never had a problem booting my ext2 fs. I've used RH7.1 and a few other distro's (i'm still a noob though) and have never had an instance where I've had to do a hard reboot.(Knock on wood). OK peace.

ok I use ext2, can someone tell me which are the main differences between ext2, ext3 and Reiser?, not the speed, but the format, how do they work.

kiitos paljon. BTW, terve Eits.
