Which distribution for old server?
 

Hi, I have a Pentium 3 866 mhz server, currently running Knoppix.

But I am finding it is rather slow, and many features are kind of 'broken', such as file sharing; it plainly doesn't work.

I need a good Linux distro that is fast yet modern (I want it to have apache, ndiswrapper and media playing capabilites, as well as proper server things like DHCP and IP masquerading, firewall etc) and is simple to use.

Mandrake say they are good for servers, but I am worried it would be rather slow on my slow server.

I am also considering Fedora, as many people I talk to say it is good for servers. But how fast is it?

Can anybody give me any recomendations? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the recomedation and the link, that article looks good. But I've heard Slackware is very complicated; what elements of it are complicated? Just the non-dependency package system? Is there any way around it?

I never had any problems with the official slackware packages,and swaret will check for dependences,makes a nice server

Slackware doesn't have any pretty graphical configurations tools (the closest is pkgtool, which is ncurses based and does limited things). If you're comfortable working in the command line, you shouldn't have a problem with Slack, but if you're used to GUI config tools, you may be in for a bit of an adhjustment.

BTW I have a DNS server (actually it belongs to a friend of mine) that's an old Pentium 60. So I don't consider 866 MHz slow for a server :D.

I'm fine working in the command line, in fact I rather enjoy it and it is often more responsive than GUIs.
