Linux - Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit

Which Desktop Operating System do you consider your primary?

I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu 8.04 after getting fed up with defragging the system and having to search the registry for unauthorised downloads of malware , replicating itself with different names. Ubuntu 8.04 had its crashes when you tried clever changes like trying to get rid of the default browser, continued with Ubuntu up till 13.04 but now I use Linuxmint, currently 17.3 , its rock solid , you would have to work very very hard to crash it now. I like Linuxmint because you can have the bottom bar to list the tabs that you have open. I use Firefox or DuckDuckGo for browsing on the net.Linuxmint has all the utilities you might need but as I run few games apart from solitaire I can't compare it as a games machine. I also run Edubuntu 14.04 for the grand children on another hdd drive. I would advise people to have two drives with different OS on Scientific linux and Centos 7 are two very clean stable OS , but with a separate / /home and /swap partition. If you get a glitch and have to reload your OS then with a separate /home all your Documents Pictures and data are preserved and not overwritten this is now straight forward and you can re-install the OS including any personal programme choices in 40 minutes flat, but you do need to know how to use Gparted to set up the size of root / /home and swap. With two drives and two OS if one crashes you can always browse on the other to check what the error messages mean and find a fix for simple problems or reload the whole system again!

As a newbie my primary software is Windows 10
 

The reason being, I want to run commercial software in Windows that's not available in Linux Ubuntu desktop. DO software designers get paid to port over to Linux? Is a profit motive foreign to the linux community? My background was in the bad ole days of mainframes, early pc's, PL/1, Cobol, assembler, C, JCL, MCP's and CNE's.

I put forth effort commensurate with return on that effort. I do enjoy linux performance. I self-publish ebooks in the PDF, MOBI, and EPUB formats. In retirement that's my income. I'm finally able to do that with SIGIL which originally ran on Windows 10 now I've ported it to Linux Ubuntu. Yes, I put time into using Windows desktop publishing tools that made me productive and money.

I just want to load the software I need without spending 30 days to figure out how to operate linux. Yep, I know that's not your fault!

So wondering exactly which commercial windows software do you want to run on Linux? But cant....

This is a tricky question, since I use both Windows and Linux. As a general rule I use Windows for work, Linux for all other activities. I have a computer running Windows 7 ( my old desktop), another desktop computer running windows 10, a laptop running Ubuntu, Mint 17.3 cinnamon and Mint 15 cinnamon in multiple boot platform.

Ubuntu 16.04 on my desktop. Mac OS X El Capitan on my MacBook Pro.

Linux Mint Mate 17.3
 

I have Windows 10 on my desktop where a few of my PC games reside, otherwise I only use my laptop with Linux Mint Mate 17.3 installed. It's a great, clean and fast OS. I love it. It made my transition from Windows super easy.

Windows 7 will be around till 2025 so ten is not going to see my machines. I'll use Linux.

Why ? ... i use Evernote ... an Evernote that is officially supported by Evernote.
There are a lot of apps such as the one i mentioned ... they require a yearly fee to use.

Over the years I have made my living supporting Windows and Unix.

Then I go home and run RISC OS (not as much as I used to) and Linux.

Windows is primary.

I use Slackware 14.1 (64-bit) as my operating system (primarily because it's free).

My new computer has only Ubuntu on it. I have a Windows 10 virtual machine though that I have to use for some work stuff (not much), and I still have to deal with my mother's Windows system from time to time and occasionally I use Windows 7 on my laptop.
