Unhappy where did my sound go?

I never had eny problems with my sound before. But today when I bootet my slackware 10 the sound was gone! it worked last night.
when I try to run alsamixer it will not start, instead it says somthing about not beeing able so to load something default. can't remember exactly what i said.

xmms tell me that it can't find /dev/mixer
mplayer tell me it cant find /dev/dsp

the sound is gone both in my 2.4 and 2.6 kernel.

I then bootet a knoppix and the sound worked find.

what happend?

I dont like the silence...

I hate alsa now and used it for awhile til strange things would occur like settings wouldn't stay put, configurations would dissappear.. so I'm now back on OSS and haven't had any problems and it actually remembers my volume setting instead of coming up as mute after a reboot..

I got my alsa to not mute after a reboot, but now it just turns the volume down...
