What to do when you are out of disk space?

Hello there. I have an 80GB HD I current run linux on. In windows I know that when you run out of disk space, you can just pop in another drive and start installing programs to that drive.

With the way linux handles disks, and a distro like Ubuntu, how can I expand my disk storage by installing another hard drive?

I don't wish to lose any of my data or reinstall linux on a different HD. I want linux to make use of both my HDs. Any way to make linux view the two drives as one mounted at / or something?

You may ask how I filled the 80GB. Well I haven't (yet), but I'm curious to know if this can be done because I have some older PCs which could benefit from this.

Thanks!

(Oh and btw they are just regular IDE hard drives.)

Generally the easiest way is to move specific directories (BIG ones) to the new disk. Maybe /media/mp3s and or /media/ripped/dvds or such ....
Easy done, and "future proof" to some extent - also doesn't affect the system component(s) of the current (running) system.

With a bit of planning, LVM is the go. There is a howto on tldp - see here for a taste.

Yep, linux is actually easier than windows in that you can move already installed stuff to another drive... Like copy and link the entire /usr over to a new partition... or /home... whatever...
