what percentage of the worlds servers run on Linux instead of windows?

Please does anyone know or have a link to an article that suggest that most of the worlds servers run on Linux instead of Windows?

I will really appreciate the link.

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure that there is any simple way of getting this data---there are lots of servers used for different purposes.

What have you found when searching on Google?

Are you able to identify what kind of server SW is used for this site?--If so, how?

Hello,

Google can find you answers like these:
Quote:

Microsoft Windows dominates in the desktop and personal computer markets with about 90% of the desktop market share, and in 2007, accounted for about 66% of all servers sold. In server revenue market share, as of Q4 2007, Microsoft Windows had 36.3% and Linux had 12.7%.[2] As of June 2009, Linux powered 88.6% of the world's most powerful supercomputers.[3] In December 2008, Linux powered five of the ten most reliable internet hosting companies, compared to Windows' one.[4]

A lot more like this one can be found using Google.

Kind regards,

Eric

For the upper end of the worlds (super)computers, you could look at the 'Top 500' list that was just released.

It's a little bit skewed towards Linux...

OP asked about servers.....I suppose a SuperComputer **could** be used as a server.....;)

Any numbers based on revenue will show bias towards Microsoft, as Linux is not usually sold.

If you were to regard the majority of servers running apache as linux (or at least OSS) based then according to Netcraft, there are more than double the number of servers running free software than there are running Windows based software. But this figure includes virtual hosts.

Netcraft confirms it: Windows is dying.

Ummmm....we are supposed to go on a search to find out what you are talking about?
Or maybe we're suppossed to already know?

posixculprit 05-31-2010 03:38 PM

It was meant for those who already know.

Its a /. meme. You can replace Windows with whatever OS, software or "*" you like.
