What Linux is best of...

I just installed Mandrake on my otehr disk... caus I found that as the best.. best GUI and so forth.

Then I talk with a guy over MSN, which tells me that I should use the Redmond Linux package ( Also known as Lycoris ) instead, caus that is double so userfriendly and looks even better than Mandrake... Should i uninstall Mandrake and use Lycoris.. anybody ?

Redmond is the buggiest operating system I have ever used. I dont like mandrake but it is way better than Redmond, seriously

sure

why not? It is always fun to try different distros. I used to use mandrake but now I am using lycoris and like it so far. it is fairly limited (in a good way) but definitely a good new user system.

wait for it...

A CLOCK!!!!!

BUGGER ME!!!

erm, no, don't use it, and slap whoever recommend it to you for insulting your intelligence. even if you know NOTHING about Linux, you are better than that.

*Listen very closely to Moderator.... hear that he would be better without... even more clever than those who recommends it.... counts his Linux knowledge at 1 hand ( one finger ). Looks up and smile. I'm a GURU.. WOOHOO.*

hehe..nah anyway.

So the system is filled with BUGs and so forth... Means that it's the worst ever. I must admit.. the design is nice. But I guess you could make any Linux distribution look like that, right ?

Ok.. Mandrake that is.

*Wonders why he wasted a CD at Lycoris*

Maybe you're missing the point tho about linux... you mention mandrake has the best gui. what do you mean by that? you can have any of DOZENS of different window managers on any distro. it's irrelevant of which distro it is as to what it looks like 99% of the time.

My bad. I know very well that you can switch and chance and whatever.

What I meant is, that is AS FAR AS I HAVE HEARD ( all I know is what I have heard ), is that Mandrake is the easiest to install and use. I have a different opinion than those, I have read from some of those hardcore Linux Developers. They don't want to make it as easy as Windows... nono.. some things about it being "infected" like Windoze.

Anyway.. I want a good easy system... When I someday think I'm good enough to start diggig in Linux.. I will. Right now I want a good replacement for Windoze.

Yeah, i tried it once and boy i deleted it in a hurry. Its basically a immitation of XP in so many ways. I don't need two of the same os's on my hard drives since i already dual boot winXP and Linux. Not to mention it doesn't even come standard with the tools to need to work good like console text editors and makes you believe linux is all GUI and like windows but the truth is that you need to learn alittle bit to be sucessful in the linux world. And about the "GUI in redmond is supposted to be the best"....i have no idea what your talking about becuase Redmond is just KDE with some windows backgrounds and menus added to it. Anyone can do that with ANY distro running KDE. Hell, just for the fun of it i once installed a Windows XP window decoration, icons, gtk theme, and everything else and boy it was EXACTLY like windows xp...i do mean EXACTLY. so your complaint about the gui being nicer is not valid becuase one can easily customize his/her desktop to there liking. Thats the beauty of linux and its software..its almost always fully customizable in every way you want.

I have nothing against learning things to use Linux.. not at all.
The problem is just, that I seems to have problems finding places where ppl really can help a total n00b. Believe this is the best board I have found so far.. no critic to you.

I just want to get some info about what to use. I got that now. I have chosen Linux Mandrake.

I get to the stuff about how to compile a program. "Just use the GCC they say". However after more research I found out that it was a GNU C Compiler. ok.. but how do I use that ? And what file should I set it to compile ?

There's billions of things which would be nice to know before I settle myself up with Linux for real.

I know about Wine. Able to run Windows .exe's. ok that's good.. caus I'm a Baldur's Gate 2 MOD Maker... and I need to be able to run that all the time.
But then ppl tell me that Wine is some useless crap which doesn't work AT ALL. However I have somebody at the next site, which says that it's a GREAT thing, and he have used it to run many games and even Internet Exploer... etc etc etc etc.

well, for that sort of thing you can't beat owning a linux book. 800+ pages of really useful info. look at mey sig, there's an online version of Linux In A Nutshell, and Redhat 7 unleashed, both of which give shed loads of brilliant background info.
