what kind of cluster should i build if this is the situation....? help! =)

what cluster should i build if i want:

to improve compilation times of programs in linux, specifically rh9.. like untarring a mozilla source and then ./configure then make

to improve program execution time and processing time, like a single process that is converting a wav file to another format, in openmosix, i tried it but it benefits only if there are many processes, for example, in my cluster i have 2 nodes, if i run 2 processes that do encoding of wav, it migrates and lessens the time it takes to complete the encoding, but if i only want a single process, it doesnt not improve and migrate, what i want is the 2 nodes will join together to encode the wav file into another format and with that way, the encoding time will be less for sure...

any ideas? or is this possible? please help =) thank you very much.

clustering has become a buzzword due to its rapid growth in large-scale simulations and load-balancing (i don't know much load balancing). openMosix is good for farming out jobs to boxes in another room somewhere. if you have a large problem that you can stretch over many CPUs and solve simultaneously then clustering can be beneficial for improved job completion time. but if you have a single process and don't want to parallelize the code by hand (big job for real problems), then i'd say you need a faster CPU. now that you mention it i could use one too...

if you're into this, there are all sorts of books on parallel programming which will quickly give you lots of ideas about where it can be useful and you can surely burn loads of time tinkering with MPI. i saw a prog that runs on multiple boxes and decodes DVDs in parallel, a good example of this type of approach. i don't think it used standard parallel techniques though.

cheers, - bp
