What is the slickest way to use a dynamic ip address for a server?

I am trying to set up a web server, but I have to deal with the fact that roadrunner provides a dynamic ip address to the cable modem. What is the best way to get around this, being that I can't draw attention from the provider by asking for a static address (this server is at work, and my friend and I are using it for our own development project, and as an FTP server).

I thought that I once saw a shell script somewhere that keeps a dynamic address alive, but I can't seem to find it now.

You can set it up to run DynDNS... When the IP changes, the daemon tells the dyndns.com servers. You use a name such as my_computer.dyndns.com . When there's a request made, the main DNS servers send the requester to dyndns.com, and it tells the requester what your current IP is.

Or, if you want only private access, you can set up a cron job to e-mail your IP to your web-based account every hour-or-so.

I use no-ip.com to use my home computer as a web/email server with my high-speed connection. It also has a script which keeps your ip address current with the DNS servers.

It is free, but you will have to have .no-ip.com[org][net]etc... in your url. I think you can have any domain name but you will have to pay.

Thumbs up

Thanks alot for the tip. I tried no-ip.com . That was too easy ! It works great, and only took a few minutes to get set up. Our account was live after only 5 minutes.

I have dyndns.org, works great!

I have ddclient setup on my red hat 9.0 box and when the box boots up it automatically looks up what my IP is, and updates all my alias's on dyndns.org

I would recommend this if you want.
