I would compile a kernel for the following reasons:

To remove unnecessary bulk.
In case I needed a module that isn't a part of the default kernel.
Gain a little speed.
So I could boast about it!
Just as vxc69 said, it is not necessary if you just want to use linux, but it teaches you a lot about your hardware and how linux works. Beside that, it is just a matter of honor to use a self-made kernel ;-p

Fun? OK maybe not....

To increase speed and rduce the size of the kernel basiclly. If I used a precompiled kernel, I might be getting the perfect kernel for me, and I might be getting 50 things I'll never use. For instance. This is a home system I really do not need scsi support., WAN network support, ARCNET support, the bajillion file systems, etc..

So my current kernel compile only contains stuff I might actually use, it also has the network support embedded into the kernel, becasue lets face it, this is my home system and if I turn it on, I'm going to go online for at least a minute or two if nothing else.

P.S. I don't know about honor. Something that can bring you to an extreme level of anger like kernel compiles gone bad has no business in the world of honor in my book. The samarai would have stuck swords in the kernel developers a long time ago for this.

To summarize, unless you need to because of new or exotic hardware, there is no real reason to do it. After you have run linux for awhile and know how to use it well from the command line, you can try to compile your own just for sh*ts and giggles.
