What is the name of the UNIX Kernel file loaded into memory?

What is the name of the UNIX Kernel file loaded into memory? It resides on the boot drive...

Is it just "unix", "config", or what?

usually the kernel is named vmlinuz in linux..
the kernel actually loads into the main memory.. i don't think it runs as a process though..

might want to read about kernel, try looking it up on google.com

Does anyone know why it's called vmlinu[b]z[/i]? I would have thought that ending in an X would have made more sense given the OS's name.

just a guess, but maybe it's the compressed ones that end in z? (almost all kernel images being compressed these days)
