What is the best graphics card at the moment for Ubuntu Linux?
Hi,
I've recently made the switch to Ubuntu 7.04 from Windows XP, and I'm sooo glad I did ! It's fantastic. Everything works as it should, except...
I have an ATI X1300 video card. From what I've read on other forums, that's not good, and I have had one or two problems with it with 3D graphics.
I'm a freelance web designer/developer and occasionally (when I'm not working) like to play games (Second Life and flight sims such as Condor mostly) and use other high-end graphics software. I need a card that will let me do my day-to-day work, and also have some fun!
Can anyone recommend a decent card? I know that I need an nVidia card, but which one? I'm running an AGP system.
The ATI driver isn't as good as the NVIDIA, it's true. On the other hand, ATI have promised to release open-source drivers for their cards, so if you have the patience, the drivers might improve enough for you.
If not, all NVIDIA cards are pretty much supported by the same driver, so it's largely irrelevant which you get in terms of Linux support.

Also, there is a promising open source nvidia driver project called nouveau.
I would suggest something from the 7600 series - a good deal more powerful that your current ATI card. GS is good, but the GT is much faster. Or perhaps a 6800 if those can still be found.
Have a look at the bugs posts & reports of this ubuntu first for your card, then, ati or nvidia are now quite fine both. There is an Ubuntu "bug" with the splash for nvidia for few cards, that you might correct manually with the grub.
(Drivers for old ati videos are pain in ..., not for nvidia)
