What is the best free DDNS service?
Hi folks,
Well, I thought LQ was a reasonable place to post this....
I have a Linux-based DVR for my security camera system. I would like to register a DDNS name so I can monitor remotely.
A simple internet search yielded tons of services. Some required a subscription, but it seems some are "free" for basic use. Some of the "free" ones are:
I'm feeling so overwhelmed reading their web sites and trying to understand what is really offered, what features I should care about, etc.
I definitely want a reputable service, and I only need it for my DVR. I am not hosting multiple domain names, not running a small group of servers, not starting a company....
I've been using no-ip.org for a few months now. Their client is easy to use, their interface is very straight forward. I use it for ownCloud and another sub-domain for remote access (Support) for the bosses laptop (dynamic IP's).

Thanks for replies -- now learning a lot about DDNS
Hello folks,
Thanks to all of you for the replies. It seems no-ip.com gets a resounding thumbs up from all of you!
It's amazing how ignorant I feel each time I delve into a new topic. I was trying to configure my security camera DVR and encountered many issues with the DDNS server configuration, my Linksys WRT54GS router configuration and the interplay between them.
I am now looking at OpenWRT. It seems that the standard Linksys firmware only allows enabling DDNS if I use DynDNS.com or TZO.com (I guess TZO has been bought by Dyn). So I have to flash OpenWRT so I can enable DDNS to point to one of the free DDNS services such as no-ip.com.....
One thing led to another and before I knew it I was up until the wee hours of the morning watching YouTube videos on router security....
:-)
Take care when installing custom firmware for a router. You could, for example, discover that the router has no room enough for the firmware AND the additional software you want to use.
I also used "no-ip.com" for a few years
no issues with it ,but it has been a few years .
At that time i was able to set up 3 domains using 3 v-hosts in Apache

Ah, I feel so ignorant...!!
well if you are not doing "router security" or "network security" all the time , them most of us fall into the same boat
