What is the best Distro?
 

As you know, I am a filthy, GUI loving, dirty nasty windoze user.
I am in rehab though.
Part of my treatment plan requires that I DL a good Linux Distro ISO.

But...what one should I pick? Debian? Red Hat?

My minimum requrment would be GOOD DRIVER DATABASE!


GeForce 3

512 MB RAM

15G UDMA100 HD

3Com NIC

Does anyone know of a Distro that fits the bill? If so, let me know.

but...... to answer your question, i would probably go with redhat. i'm a seasoned slackware user, but i've found debian's installer to be on crack. never could get the system installed correctly. plus redhat _should_ support your hardware right out of the box; whereas debian would probably need a new kernel compile, and is generally harder to get around in than red hat (for people unfamiliar with how linux works, at least). red hat's probably the easiest (IMHO) distro to switch from windows to.

but yeah.... let's try and keep the REALLY redundant questions to a minimum please. :-P

Red Hat is the best Linux distro.. Debian is a good choice too ..
My advice to you .. Don't install SUSE or MANDRAKE !!!

Okay you didn't search but enough about that. AS for Distro try Mandrake or RedHat, I use both Mandy 8.2 & RedHat 7.2 & I like RedHat the best. This is what I like to use, but one of the points of Linux is that is 100% customizable to whatever you like or need. Most any current distro should work for you, so do a search here or look in the distributions forum of this website. Anyways there are several ways of getting Linux 1.) buying a full box distro 2.) download it (if you have a fast connection) 3.) buy a burnt copy of Linux http://www.linuxcentral.com/ this site also sells books, boxed distros, & several Linux items. I recommend that you pick up a book on Linux before you even try to install, it's alot different from the windows experience.

I still say SuSE 8 for your specific issue. Anyone running an nvidia card using SuSE 8? I am wondering if the drivers come default on any of the install possibilities (ftp, boxed basic, or boxed pro). That's the jist of the need for an answer to this question.

That and, what chipset(s) do a(some) 3com NIC(s) have? Although I guess that's not an issue since he got it running already and has mastered that.

I voted SuSE8 Pro (boxed version) because of it's immense choice for commercial drivers and commercial apps.

for Linux starters who are using Windows before, I do recommend Mandrake. It's pretty easy for those trying to shift from another operating system and don't wanna stay away from the point and click and click and point habit. :)

If you have mastered Mandrake, then it is time to try out other distros and then start comparing.

my wife prefers suse 8 to redhat 7.2 - i've used both plus lower versions of redhat and mandrake. haven't tried any of the mandrakes in last couple of years though.

many distro attempts are the recommended approach. suse 8 or redhat 7.2 or greater is fine.

debian is my new favorite. if you're a newbie. don't do debian. with that in mind - apt-get is f'ing awesome. installing software is as easy as deciding you want it and telling it to go get it. :) too fun.

if a newbie gets excited and wants to bring this subject up then they should be able to do that. remember when you first got involve how you felt discussing things linux. screenshots and all ;)

Ok, Ill go DL RedHat because the only ISO I saw of SuSE was live trial or somesuch. I dont need a 600MB demo, thank you very much.

Just because I got SuSE installed and on the 'net dont mean Ive mastered anything, hehe.

My best hope is to have a working install that I can surf with. Then comes tweaking, then comes the UT2003 demo...muwhahahha!

There is NO such thing as "the best distro". It's the matter of taste and needs for every individual.

no, that view is extremely wrong. none of our regular and valued posters are "l33t" afaik, certainly none of the moderators are. People get annoyed because many other people are lazy and can not be bothered to make a little effort to find their own answers for themselves. No one is god like, they just get tired of the repetition. please do not tell fellow members how to use this forum in future. thanks
