what is linux market share?
I am doing a paper on Linux and I can't find the information I am looking for. Does anyone know where I can find reliable objective information on what US market share Linux has in desktops, web servers and file servers? Thanks

I don't think you will be able to find reliable objective information.
I have seen many surveys, reports and news articles about OS market share, and most of them have been sponsored by Microsoft.
All I can tell you is that Linux is growing at a fast rate and it is a definite competitor to Windows.

Barn- Check out this site for current Linux server market share. And check here to see historical Linux server market share.
EDIT: Note, these sites show WEB server market share. Those running Apache are mostly Linux servers, but aren't always Linux. They may also be running flavors of BSD, or Solaris. There's even an Apache for Windows I believe
zLinuxz and martinman- I have an IDE 160 GB 7200 RPM Western Digital HD with an 8 MB cache and it flies.

That is not exactly true, most servers that run Apache are not Linux servers.
Apache binaries are available for many different OSes.
Take a look at the binaries download page on Apache
http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/binaries/

Yeah, I realize that they make binaries for other OS's. But I am pretty sure the operating system used most by Apache servers is Linux. I could be wrong though...

As it happens I did some analysis of the Netcraft stats - looking only at fortune 500 companies, and Apache is used a LOT on Solaris, and even appears on NT!
Linux accounts for 8% of OS for web servers, and Apache's share is 30% for fortune 500 companies.
