Hi

For starters linux is just like Windows in the way you can use it every day use, There is much more freedom with linux in my opion.
What sort of help were you looking for
You mention Administrator that entails alot from running/maintianing a system to all sorts

Random idea: use a web-browser -- firefox, for example.

If you have main stream system i.e ubuntu open suse etc they have a desktop of some sort,
There is gnome kde xfce lxde
Even with a console which you mention there are programs to do this kind of work.

Do you have a linux distro installed if so which 1, If you are working on school machines have they restricted you to console only???

Well, we are doing fedora and red hat enterprise linux and thisis my first time doing linux so it is like a different world to me but i like the fact that i use commands to do things but when it comes to accessing the web, i dont know how does that work and i just dont know the value of those commands and what are they doing to the system and how can i know these things...i guess that is the only way i will get to understand the os and like it even more...

---------- Post added 12-31-12 at 08:06 AM ----------

I havn,t used fedora so not much help with that OS.
If there is a desktop installed you could try typing startx I,m not saying that will start the desktop on fedora but it dose on my systems.
Also you could try typing links or lynx at the prompt this might open up a console web browser

While you can use the command line to accomplish tasks in Linux (which gives you the true power of Linux), it is not necessary. You can use the typical (for Windows) point-and-click method of doing things using the mouse/icons/menus/etc.

It is like Windows in the sense that let you accomplish tasks on your computer utilizing the hardware you have installed. Sure you have commands but you also have a graphical interface allowing you run application by clicking on icons and move files by dragging them around folders.
Linux's big deal and maybe the most important thing for many users is its openness which mean it let you modify the system the way you want. it put the user in control of the system. Its license also allows you to distribute it among your friends and family. However it doesnt mean it will always be free of cost. There are some Linux base applications that you still need to pay for it if you want to installed but there is also lot of app available free of cost.

The number one application for Linux is web servers that is why if you want to be a network ministrator you should get familiar with Linux. A huge part of the internet is running on Linux servers. Sites like Google, Facebook, and Amazon are using Linux servers to run their stuff.

Another big application for Linux is portable devices, Android is like the most used OS in mobile phones and tablets and Android is base using the linux kernel. This topic is very sensitive among apple users but that is reality. Also Apples OS X was developed base in a open source software similar to Linux.

Hopefully you stick with it as a home user or as developer or network admin or just for fun.
Good luck to you

I have always held the position that linux is a copy of unix for x86 computers.
