What is libcap, and how can I make sure its installed?
I recently set up a slack 8.1 system, and want to use it to do stealth traffic sniffing and logging. I have snort, but it says that I must make sure that libcap is installed. What is this, whats its purpose, and how can I make sure that its installed?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that libcap is part of the ISDN4Linux (i4l) package.

are you sure you didn't mean libpcap?
snort doesn't require libcap, it needs libpcap.
[rijilv@eol snort-1.8.7]$ grep -re libcap *
configure: --with-libpcap-includes=DIR libcap include directory"
configure: --with-libpcap-libraries=DIR libcap library directory"
configure.in: [ --with-libpcap-includes=DIR libcap include directory],
configure.in: [ --with-libpcap-libraries=DIR libcap library directory],
I suspect a type-o
if you want info on libpcap , search google and click the first link.
